Sam Sawyer

A person can learn a lot about someone in a short amount of time. During my short interview with Sam I learned a lot, I even learned that we have some things in common. There are billions of people out there and if we took a few minutes of our time to reach out towards a stranger we may end up finding a friend. Sometimes the smallest conversations can change everything. Sam was just a person in my class that happened to miss the first day just like me but I ended up finding out that we have more in common then I would have ever thought.

For example, he is 20 years old, single and grew up in Easton Pennsylvania. He also has one standard poodle dog, which is just one of the things we had in common since I have a dog too. He’s moved around a lot, as have I. He has been to many states, like Florida, California, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and South Carolina. One thing I envy about him is that he did a snowboarding tour in Vermont and New Hampshire. I’ve always wanted to learn how to snowboard so this is something that caught my interest. Then there was something that he has done that I never want to try which is surfing in California because I am terrified of the ocean. Also he likes sushi, unfortunately I find seafood disgusting. 

I have also learned that his major is undecided. Which is understandable because we are all still so young and trying to find ourselves. We have both dropped out of college a few times and are both set on this being the final run through that gets us to our career. Once again we are both still young with plenty of time to decide our future. Which is the meaning behind some of my tattoos, which we were also able to bond and relate over because one of them has to do with a video game but also has more meaning behind it and he asked me what the butterfly was from and I told him it is from one of my favorite video games “Life is Strange.” He told me that has has actually played the game before which was shocking to me because not a lot of people know about that video game. We then went further into the nerdy video game talk and found out we both love a game called “The Last of Us.” Although I do not have time to play video games anymore it was nice to be able to talk to someone who understands my love for video games. I also learned that his favorite color is orange, he is a Christian, and we both only have one brother, although his is a half brother and 37 years old mine is also older. 

Although Sam and I may not become life long friends its nice to know that there is someone in my class I can relate to and get along with. I believe this was a good exercise to get people to interact with each other and come out of their shells.
